When Prudential’s president Carroll shanks came to Boston in 1957 to announce his company’s plans to build the Prudential Center, city leaders hosted a gala event for the corporate chieftain at the Sheraton Plaza Hotel. The room was festooned with a large poster showing Ernest Henderson, the head of Sheraton, and Boston mayor John Hynes rolling out the red carpet for Prudential, which had favored the city by deciding to locate its Northeastern Home Office there.
